Reflect

There are a lot of wonderful and common aspects about Islam and Muslims that I'd like to share.   It's so easy to criticize anyone's religion or personal beliefs but how often do we stop for a moment and reflect on some of the beautiful aspects they all have?

To list just a few:
  1. Muslims believe in the one true God of the Prophet Abraham as the Jews and Christians do.
  2. Muslims tend to be very pious, especially adhering to their five daily obligatory prayers.  This is very similar to Christianity's five daily prayers which is called the "Liturgy of the Hours".  Muslims honor Allah by a ceremonial washing prior to their prayer time and this can trace back to the earliest ancient Jewish tradition found in the Torah.  We can learn a lot from our Muslim brothers and sisters by their great example of piousness.
  3. Every year Muslims must offer alms (zakat) to the poor.  This takes place during their holy month of Ramadan and it is usually a percentage of their income.  In addition to offering alms, many Muslims help feed the poor and needy and often times they invite the needy into their homes to share an Iftar (break-fast) meal with them after sunset.  The act of alms giving is a wonderful self giving charity that is also expressed in Judaism and Christianity and is similar to that in Islam.
  4. Muslim culture tends to be very family oriented, hospitable, respectful, warm and welcoming.  Often in the West people are not use to this kind of warmness (unless you're from the South) and its a breath of fresh air and I believe many people can learn from their example.
  5. The Quran sets the basis for the way in which each Muslim must live their life, in addition to following the life of the Prophet Muhammad as their greatest example of man.  When in need, whether it be for spiritual guidance, or settling a dispute, the Quran and the life of the Prophet offers believers rays of hope and inspiration to rulings on settling their differences with one another.  Looking back, one can see the similarity between the books of Leviticus and Deuteronomy and the teachings of Jesus.
